What Is the PREVENT Calculator?
PREVENT™ (Predicting Risk of cardiovascular disease EVENTs) is the American Heart Association’s cardiovascular risk calculator, published in 2023. It estimates your chance of having a heart attack, stroke, or heart failure over the next 10 years, and for adults 30–59, over the next 30 years. It was developed and validated in more than 6 million adults.
What’s Different From the Older Calculator?
- Starts at age 30, so younger men can see their long-term risk, not just the next decade.
- Includes heart failure, not just heart attack and stroke.
- Adds kidney function (eGFR), a major and often overlooked driver of cardiovascular risk.
- Accounts for treatment such as blood pressure medication and statins.
- Removes race from the calculation.
Who Should Use It?
PREVENT is designed for adults ages 30 to 79 who have not already had a heart attack, stroke, or heart failure. If you already have cardiovascular disease, your risk is managed differently, so talk with your Provider.
This page uses the PREVENT base equations. The full PREVENT model can also incorporate HbA1c, urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio, and a social deprivation index when those are available.
FAQ
PREVENT Calculator Questions.
What does my percentage mean?
It’s your estimated chance of having that event over the time period shown. For example, a 10-year total CVD risk of 8% means that about 8 out of 100 people with the same risk factors would be expected to have a heart attack, stroke, or heart failure within 10 years.
Why does the calculator ask about kidney function?
Kidney function is closely linked to heart health. Reduced kidney function raises the risk of heart attack, stroke, and especially heart failure, which is why PREVENT includes eGFR.
Why is 30-year risk only shown up to age 59?
The PREVENT 30-year equations were developed for adults ages 30 to 59. For older adults, the 10-year estimate is the most reliable.
Can I lower my risk?
Many of the inputs, including blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, body weight, and smoking, can be improved. Your Provider can help you build a plan that targets the factors that matter most for you.
